Which file formats do you get from a drone survey?
A drone survey is only useful if the data fits your software. DXF, LAS, GeoTIFF, OBJ, PDF — it looks like alphabet soup, but each format has a clear job. Here is which format you need when, so you agree it correctly up front.

The difference between a usable and a frustrating delivery often comes down to the format. Receive a point cloud when your engineering office expects linework, and the conversion work begins. Know up front what you need, and the data ties straight into your workflow — no lost time, no second delivery.
The formats and what they are for
- DXF / DWG — linework and 2D/3D drawings for AutoCAD and Civil 3D. This is what a draughtsman or engineering office usually wants.
- LAS / LAZ — the point cloud: each measurement point with x, y and height. For 3D analysis, volumes and anyone who wants to work on the raw data. LAZ is the compressed variant.
- GeoTIFF — a georeferenced image: the orthophoto or elevation model (DSM/DTM) as a backdrop in GIS or CAD.
- OBJ (or other mesh) — the textured 3D model for visualisation and presentation.
- PDF — the report and derived drawings to share with anyone who does not use CAD.
Which format for which purpose?
In short: drawing in CAD → DXF/DWG (plus LAS if you want the points). Volumes or 3D analysis → LAS/LAZ. Map backdrop or GIS → GeoTIFF. Presentation → OBJ. Sharing with the client → PDF. If you work in BIM, agree up front how the data comes into Revit. Prefer not to download anything and just measure in the browser? That works via an online 3D viewer, or shared through a client portal such as DronePortal.
Common mistakes
- Not agreeing the format up front and having to convert afterwards.
- Confusing a point cloud with linework. LAS is raw data, not a drawn plan.
- Forgetting the coordinate system. Without Lambert 72 / TAW the data does not tie into existing plans.
