What does a drone land survey cost?
"What does it cost to survey a site with a drone?" The honest answer: it depends on what you need. A rough overview is a very different thing from a controlled 3D model your engineering office can work with. Here is what really drives the price.
Why do prices vary so much?
Two quotes for "surveying a site" can differ threefold, and that is not arbitrary. One delivers a picture, the other a measurable dataset a contractor or designer drops straight into their software. You only compare fairly once you know what sits behind the price.
What drives the price
- Area and shape. A compact plot needs one short flight; a long corridor or a large industrial site needs several flight lines and more processing.
- Required accuracy. Absolute centimetre accuracy needs ground control or RTK; if you only need relative proportions, you can work lighter.
- Number of GCPs. More control points means more fieldwork and therefore more time — needed once the dataset has to hold up. See when they are really required in What are GCPs and when do you need them?
- Deliverables and formats. An orthophoto is quick; a DXF/DWG, a LAS point cloud or a full 3D model with volume calculation takes more processing. See Which file formats do you get?
- Accessibility and context. Travel time, airspace restrictions and flight preparation all count.
And compared to a land surveyor?
A traditional surveyor usually charges by the day or by the point. For setting out a boundary or drawing up a deed they remain the right choice — and legally required. But for surveying whole areas, height differences and volumes, a single drone flight delivers thousands of measurement points in half an hour where someone on foot needs days. Common mistakes
- Comparing on price alone. Ask what is delivered: format, accuracy and whether it is controlled with GCPs.
- Expecting a dossier-grade survey at a hobby rate. Without control points there is no hard absolute accuracy.
- Asking for extra formats afterwards. Say up front which software you need the data for.

Is a drone cheaper than a land surveyor?
