Verifying volumes at a crushing yard: does the weighbridge ticket match?
At a crushing yard everything revolves around tonnes and cubic metres — and that is exactly where the disputes start. The weighbridge ticket says one thing, the pile says another. An independent drone measurement records the actual volume, dated and verifiable.
Why weight and volume are not the same
A weighbridge measures weight, not volume. And weight is slippery: wet crushed sand weighs far more than the same volume dry, and crushed concrete differs in density by fraction (0/20, 20/40). Convert weight back to cubic metres with a fixed density and you are almost always off. For invoicing or stock you want to know how much is there, not how heavy it happens to be after a rain shower.
How the measurement works
The drone flies the whole yard from above and builds a 3D model of every pile. On that model the volume is calculated against the known ground surface. The result is a figure per pile, with a date and coordinates attached — not a guess of "a pile like that is roughly so much". Counter-evidence in a dispute
Precisely because the measurement is independent, dated and controlled, it holds up as counter-evidence. If a client disputes the removed quantity, or you doubt a delivery yourself, you have proof rather than a stand-off. That is the difference between a conversation and a dispute.
Common mistakes
- Converting weight to volume with a single fixed density, as if moisture and fraction do not matter.
- Estimating by eye. A trained eye is easily 10% off on a large pile.
- Only measuring once there is a dispute. A baseline measurement at the start is worth gold later.
