In recent weeks, drones have once again dominated the news. Illegal flights over military zones and even Brussels Airport (Zaventem) led to airspace closures. Understandably, both government and citizens are on high alert. Unfortunately, the consequences of these illegal flights are deeply affecting our legitimate operations.<\/b> For professional drone pilots like us at DroneView.be, it\u2019s becoming increasingly difficult to work safely and undisturbed.<\/p>\n

When a Professional is Suddenly Seen as a Threat<\/h2>\n

We carry out essential daily inspections of rooftops, buildings, and solar panels\u2014detecting thermal anomalies with precision equipment. All flights are performed legally under EU open category rules, at low altitude, and only under safe weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Still, we often encounter public suspicion. Just days ago, during a rooftop inspection, someone shouted “I’ll shoot that drone out of the sky!”<\/b>\u2014despite our hi-vis vests, clearly marked van, and low, legal flight at 20 meters with a thermal camera. No privacy invasion, no dangerous flying\u2014just professional work. And yet, the police were called.<\/p>\n

\"Relax<\/p>\n

Communication Starts with the Client<\/h2>\n

We always try to inform authorities properly: registration ready, pre-flight police notifications (especially during current tensions), clear signage on-site. But we\u2019ve found that things run smoother when the client also informs nearby residents<\/b>. A quick notice can prevent unnecessary panic or hostility.<\/p>\n

Strict Rules\u2026 with a Small Breakthrough<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Thermal inspections depend on sunny conditions and are often scheduled last-minute. But flights near controlled zones like VLL1 or VLL0<\/b> require an 8\u201315 working day application.<\/p>\n

Good News from skeyes<\/h3>\n

skeyes recently confirmed that a request can be submitted for a full-day slot (up to 23h59) and duplicated for several days\u2014making planning easier despite weather dependency.<\/p>\n

Lifesaving work: our drones in emergency situations<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Last week, a large-scale search operation took place in our neighborhood for the missing person, Noa Jordens from Sint-Truiden<\/b>. A tremendous, coordinated community effort was launched.<\/p>\n

For context:<\/b> As many as 60 volunteers<\/b> and 45 search dogs<\/b> scoured an area of 20 square kilometers<\/b>. We have nothing but praise for this fantastic, tireless commitment!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We were ready to jump in immediately with our drone and thermal camera \u2013 entirely free of charge \u2013 but found that the search area was on the edge of an orange zone. Legally, we couldn’t simply start working there.<\/p>\n

Our drone with a thermal camera can quickly scan large areas and detect heat sources (people)<\/b>, which is crucial in emergency situations, especially in the dark<\/b>. This is invaluable when every minute counts.<\/p>\n

Our drone can see in 2 minutes what 10 people on the ground (or 10 search dogs) could never cover in the same amount of time.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But here is the double issue:<\/b> Not only was the area near a controlled zone, the possibility of flying at night \u2013 often essential during searches \u2013 is not permitted under the basic regulations (Open Category)<\/b>. This raises the question:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What are the possibilities for professional pilots to assist in emergency situations?<\/b> Is an emergency procedure possible via the police or government that lifts both the geozone restrictions and the night flight restrictions<\/b>? Should we refuse such an assignment, even if every minute counts? We have posed this question to the competent authorities and are awaiting an answer. As soon as we get clarification, we will update this blog.<\/p>\n

Focus on Enforcement\u2014But What About the Professionals?<\/h2>\n

Significant investments are being made in the detection and interception of illegal drones. However, recently, we are mainly observing symbolic politics<\/b> that make the work of professionals even harder.<\/p>\n

The National Security Council recently decided that all drones and their pilots<\/b> should henceforth be registered. According to this plan, an unregistered drone would automatically be considered “hostile”<\/b>.<\/p>\n

This fuels the fire of misunderstanding. While we, as professional operators, are already registered with EASA and use our Remote ID, the government is now creating an unnecessary extra national registration. This clashes with existing EU regulations, leads to additional administrative burden<\/b>, and creates legal uncertainty. Furthermore, malicious actors won’t register anyway, while we bear the costs and logistical problems (such as light C0 drones becoming too heavy due to a mandatory add-on).<\/p>\n

We hope that the arrival of U-space<\/b> will bring improvements. With U-space, recognized service providers (USSPs) will manage air coordination, allowing flights to be approved faster and easier \u2013 without having to go through air traffic control every time.<\/b><\/p>\n

We hope that the rollout of U-space<\/b> will change that. With USSPs managing airspace clearance, drone pilots will finally have faster, more efficient authorization\u2014without relying entirely on air traffic control.<\/p>\n
